24 March 2006, New York
Remarks of H.E. Mr. Munir Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations at the Launching of the Tripartite Forum -on Interfaith Cooperation forPeace

Thank, you very much, Mr. Secretary.

I also do not have prepared remarks but I have been inscripted by your Ambassador to say a few words. But your Ambassador is very good at inscripting. And I think that this gathering this afternoon is a testimony to his persuasive powers and to his diplomatic skills.

I would like to congratulate you, Mr. Secretary and the Philippine government on the initiative that you have taken. It is most timely initiative and it has evoked right support. It is also an initiative that is my colleague from Kazakhstan has noted which is complementary with so many other efforts that have been made to bring our cultures and our peoples together.

The distinguished President of the General Assembly has read the diplomatic poetry which he authored into the Human Rights Council resolution. And that poetry of course, has to be translated into deeds and actions and to evoke the results that we all desire.

I believe that all religions and cultures have the same message of peace. The differences that have arisen at times, differences that are largely political in nature. The differences as has been noted by our colleague from Guatemala that arise mostly from ignorance. And once we are all able to recognize the humanity in nature that above all, we are all the same race, the same human beings, the same species that whatever our differences: political and others, that it is human beings we are talking to and dealing with.

Once we recognize that humanity in the other, that is the premise in which all our problems can be overcomed because that evokes the mutual respect that is necessary to resolve problems, to deal with each other with equality, with humanity and compassion. I thank you very much. I wish you all success. Pakistan as you know is also about to compliment the initiative on equality in life and moderation that has been initiated by our President. We will work together with the Philippines and will all our friends to promote our common objectives.

Thank you.
